Kathryn Bigelow and Tom Hardy are teaming up for “The True American,’ a dramatic true story set in post-9/11 America.

Oscar winning director Bigelow has partnered with Annapurna Pictures to direct and produce the project through her production arm First Light with Hardy set to star. Hardy has been earning rave reviews recently for his one-man-film “Locke,” the suspenseful thriller that takes place entirely in a moving car. Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Matthew Budman, who co-produced Bigelow’s “Zero Dark Thirty” are on board as Producer and Executive
Producer.

“The True American” is set in the angry, charged days after the 9/11 attacks. A self-proclaimed “American Terrorist” named Mark Stroman murders two immigrants in Texas. His third victim, Raisuddin
Bhuiyan, a Bagladesh Air Force Veteran, survives, however, and their two lives collide in unexpected ways.

The film is based on the book “True American: Murder & Mercy in Texas” by New York Times journalist Anand Giridharadas which was released earlier this month. As per usual with books that are predicted to be bestsellers, the films rights were snatched up relatively quickly by Ellison and her team.
