Magnolia Acquires Foodie Doc ‘Noma — My Perfect Storm’

Magnolia Pictures has secured North American rights to food documentary “Noma — My Perfect Storm,” which chronicles the life (and restaurant) of chef René Redzepi. His famed Copenhagen-based restaurant “Noma” was voted “best in the world” from 2010-2012, and after a surprise defeat in 2013, reclaimed the prize in 2014. Produced by Documentree Films Ltd. and directed by Pierre Deschamps (“Rugby: The Life of New Zealand”), the film is partly inspired by two books written by Redzepi: “Noma: Time and Place in Nordic Cuisine,” and “René Redzepi: A Work in Progress.” 

Filmmaker Pierre Deschamps spent more than three years at Noma following the eccentric chef, where he learned about the reinvention of Danish cuisine through a process known as “foraging” — a pioneered approach which requires sourcing every dish’s ingredient from the rich, fertile environments of Scandinavia. Magnolia is hedging its bets that “Noma — My Perfect Storm” falls more in line with the like’s of “Babette’s Feast,” “Jiri Dreams of Sushi” and Pixar’s “Ratatouille,” and less with John Wells’ maligned awards flop “Burnt.”
