Meet the 2013 Rooftop Shorts Filmmakers #4: Dustin Bowser's 'Weighting' Captures the Lose-Lose of Breakup

Dustin Bowser grew up in Colorado Springs and began filmmaking by making church videos for the local youth group. What it’s about: It’s about the moment of a breakup, but not just the actual moment itself, but the feel of a breakup. It’s about how hard it is to say what you really want to say in those moments. It’s about what we take with us when relationships end, and what we leave behind. And it’s about cake.

On the challenges: “Getting through the shoot itself was a challenge, as we tried to get everything perfect in one long take. Though the editing was easy, merely a matter of choosing the take with the most ‘magic’, the other post-production was pretty challenging. With removals of cables, a car driving through in the background, and a leg, it’s probably my longest amount of time versus finished screen seconds of anything I’ve worked on so far.”

What’s next: “I’m in the middle of shooting a feature with some very talented friends of mine. It’s fully independent, and a labor of love for all involved but has us all very excited. My modus operandi when approaching this project was “what’s the most badass feature film I can make using no more gear than I have in my bedroom.” Other than that, I’m keeping it locked away in the cabin as it were for the time being.”
