Meet the 2013 SXSW Filmmakers #22: Fede Alvarez Aims to Surprise You With His ‘Evil Dead’ Remake

Fede Alavarez is the Uruguayan filmmaker behind the anticipated “Evil Dead” remake. He has been shooting shorts since he was a kid. His favorites films are “Back to the Future,” “Star Wars,” “Scaramouche,” “Adventures
of Baron Munchausen,” “Phantom of Paradise” and “Oldboy.”

What it’s about: A weird and twisted re telling of the 80’s horror classic: The Evil Dead. Mia, a young drug addict heads to a remote cabin in the woods with 4 of
her closest friends and family to kick the habit for once and for all,
where they will find a bizarre and ancient book, that will unleash a
horrible curse upon them.

What else he wants audiences to know: “That whatever they think they know about our film, is probably wrong…”

On the biggest challenges: “Pleasing the hardcore Evil Dead fans, cause they don’t want the same movie again, but they don’t want you to change anything!”

Films that inspired him: “Coppola’s Dracula, the Omen, The Exorcist, 28 days later and all the Evil Dead films obviously.“

What he hopes audiences will walk away with: “I want them to have nightmares for a long time with our film, just like I
had when I watched the original Evil Dead for the first time.”
