“The Light Between Oceans” follows lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and his wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander), a happy couple living off the coast in post-World War I Australia. Tom and Isabel want nothing more than to bring a child into the world, but after Isabel miscarries, all hope is lost. However, one day the couple rescues a baby girl who has washed ashore on a rowboat, and the two decide to name her Lucy and adopt her as their own. After years of happiness, Tom and Isabel make a visit to the mainland and meet widower Hannah Roennfeldt (Rachel Weisz) who lost her husband and child at sea. It immediately becomes clear to Tom that Lucy is the Hannah’s child and he feels it’s only right to return her, but Isabel doesn’t want their happy family being torn apart. A wonderful dream curdles into a nightmare as difficult questions about parenthood and marriage rise to the surface.
