Shout! Factory has acquired the rights to the cult television show “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” The deal will partner Shout! Factory founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos with the original show’s creator and writer Joel Hodgson.
In addition, Hodgson has opened up a new Kickstarter with the intent of bringing the show back on the air. In all respects, it is a Kickstarter for the fans: The lead video is staged like an episode of the show with Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo bickering at the front of the screen. They even come on screen for a moment.
While the Kickstarter is asking for $2 million, it has higher hopes beyond that: Three episodes can be made for $2 million, but six episodes can be made for $3.3 million, nine episodes can be made for $4.4 million, and 12 episodes can be made for $5.5 million.
Joel Hodgson said in a statement that “I am thrilled to team with Shout! Factory – one of MST3K’s greatest supporters – to once again pick up the creative mantle. It’s been a long time coming and I feel ready for the show’s reboot and hopefully lots of new iterations in different media. I’m also looking forward to working with both creative pros and the loyal fan base who have been inspired by our humble show over the years.” He added, “Actually, I’m not sure if there really is such a thing as a humble show. Let me check on that.”
