New York Film Festival Adds Godard Retrospective, ‘Dazed and Confused’ 20th Anniversary Screening
Today the Film Society of Lincoln Center announced that it will host a three-week retrospective on the pioneer of French New Wave cinema, Jean-Luc Godard, which will be a part of this year’s New York Film Festival. Among the most well-known and highly revered of filmmakers, the writer/director has made 45 shorts, 11 medium-length films, 40 features and three television series and has surely inspired, in one way or another, all filmmakers of today.
Co-curated by Kent Jones and Jake Perlin, the series is titled “Jean-Luc Godard – The Spirit of the Forms” and will begin during the second week of the festival on October 9th, continuing through the 30th, well after the NYFF concludes. Details on which titles will be playing after the festival and the scheduled times for these screenings will be announced next week, but among the work set to be revisited is “Six Fois Deux” (1976), “France/Tour/Détour/Deux/Enfants” (1979) and “Histoire(s) du cinema,” Godard’s three series, along with premieres of a new DCP of “Alphaville” (1965), a new print of “Hail Mary/The Book of Mary” (1985), and a new DCP of “For Ever Mozart” (1996).
Commmenting on the retrospective, NYFF Director of
Programming and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones stated, “No matter
how many times you’ve seen ‘Vivre Sa Vie’ or ‘France/Tour/Detour/Deux/Enfants’ or ‘Nouvelle Vague,’ you can never know them completely: their
beauties run as deep as their mysteries, their disturbances and
disjunctions are as numerous as their revelations. Whenever they appear
to settle into a fixed rhythm, they upend and reconfigure themselves in
order to arrive at another rhythm pitched at a higher level. Godard’s
work, whether it’s on film, video or HD, unfolds like no one else’s, and
shocks the viewer into a new relationship with the world and with
images.”
In addition to the retrospective, the NYFF will also have a 20th anniversary screening of Richard Linklater’s “Dazed and Confused” on October 10 at 9pm. This screening will be presented by New Wave, the Film Society’s young patron program, with Linklater and members of the cast set to be in attendance.
