‘Other People’ Trailer: Molly Shannon Captivates As Mother Struggling With Cancer
The first trailer for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival opener, “Other People,” has just been released. Making his feature directorial debut, the movie is written by “Saturday Night Live” writer Chris Kelly and is inspired by his real life experiences.
“My mom passed away in September 2009 and I wrote the first draft of this in the summer of 2012,” Kelly had previously told IndieWire. “It didn’t just happen and instantly I was like, ‘I’m going to write a movie about this.’ It was when I decided I wanted to try to write a feature. I wanted to write something I felt I could do in a truthful way.”

“Other People” is an emotional comedy-drama that stars Molly Shannon and Jesse Plemons. The story follows David (Plemons), a struggling comedy writer who recently broke up with his boyfriend and moves back home to help his mother (Shannon) who suffers from cancer. Upon his return, he feels like a stranger in his childhood home and has to face his conservative father who refuses to accept his sexuality. The hardest part of it all, dealing with his mother’s declining health and facing the fact that he might loose her.

The trailer shows the ups and downs both Shannon and Plemons go through and the touching moments they share together. The “SNL” alum gives a riveting performance that has critics talking about the actress and film being an awards season frontrunner.
“I thought that when your mom dies, you get that beautiful revelation about life and everything becomes clear,” says Plemons in the sneak peek. “It always just feels like something better happens to other people.”
“Other People” will be released in theaters on September 9.
