Surprise! The South American Top Cat movie – Don Gato y su Pandilla – the hand drawn/CG Top Cat movie from Argentinian Illusion Studios which opened in Mexico City in September 2011 – is back, and opening in the US this summer.

Comedian Rob Schneider and Grindhouse mainstay Danny Trejo are lending their voices to “pivotal characters” in the VIVA Pictures release, now called Top Cat: The Movie, which will hit theaters, digital download and home entertainment in August.

Here is the English trailer produced for the film’s British release last year:

The two actors are voicing two characters who ween’t part of the original 1961 prime-time Hanna Barbera series – Schneider is portraying “Police Chief Strickland”; Trejo, portrays an allied bulldog named “Griswald”. I would assume the rest of the voices are the cast who dubbed the film for Europe.

Warner Bros. licensed the rights to create this Top Cat movie to Anima Estudios and Illusion Studios several years ago, bowing to the demand for a fresh film featuring these characters – still very popular around the world. Warners handled the home video release in South America. Viva Pictures is the studio who recently released the long-shelved Foodfight! The Movie in the US on DVD.

Here is the official plot synopsis:

Top Cat: The Movie welcomes the return of the lovable characters from the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon.  Top Cat, along with his gang of city-slickin’ fast-talking friends and their alley shenanigans — Benny the Ball, Fancy Fancy, Choo Choo, Spook and Brains — have to face a new sheriff.  Police Chief Strickland (Schneider) has the latest technology and plans to keep peace with it — his robot police force.  He and his robots are raining on the alley cats’ parade and as a result, the gang, including bulldog Griswald (Trejo), is forced to ban together to make sure Strickland doesn’t cash in on one of their nine lives.  Can the gang scratch their way back to freedom against the new robotic police force?
