Sofia Coppola Direct Live Action 'The Little Mermaid'!!!

It’s a gay dream come true (or at least mine): Sofia Coppola has signed on to direct a live-action version of “The Little Mermaid.”

Deadline reported the news, which should be cause for serious excitement for the many among us who were obsessed with the 1989 Disney version as children, and then grew up to become obsessed with the work of Sofia Coppola (or at the very least her first few films). Considering a good chunk of the film will have to be shot in an underwater setting, it’s clearly going to be a huge undertaking and Coppola’s first foray into major VFX territory. But even after “The Bling Ring,” we’re willing to just blindly trust she can pull all this off. BECAUSE WE WANT HER TO SO BAD.

A trio of women are behind the script, with Caroline Thompson (“Edward Scissorhands”) rewriting a script thats already seen drafts by “Fifty Shades of Grey” scribe Kelly Marcel and “Shame” scribe Abi Morgan (who we assume weren’t giving “The Little Mermaid” an NC-17 makeover despite their credentials). Casting has yet to be announced, but we wouldn’t surprised (or disappointed, really) if Coppola’s recent collaborators Emma Watson and Elle Fanning are in the mix for Ariel.  But we’d also totally be up for more melancholic take on the role care of previous Coppola kids Scarlett Johannson and Kirsten Dunst (who both, might we add, look great with red hair).

The Deadline article said the intention is “to move quickly,” but in the meantime, we’ll be humming this tune all day:
