Specialty Box Office: ‘Frances’ Ha-s Stellar First Weekend; ‘Pines’ Becomes 2013’s First $20 Million Indie
“Frances Ha” was off to a stellar start this weekend for IFC Films. The Noah Baumbach directed film — which stars and was co-written by Greta Gerwig — took in $134,000 from just 4 theaters for a $33,500 average. As far as per-theater-averages go, that’s the best for a limited release since “The Place Beyond The Pines,” and the third best of 2013 so far.

Baumbach and star Greta Gerwig, played to sold out shows all weekend
long in New York City and Los Angeles. The advanced regional publicity
screenings have also been wildly popular as we roll the film out to the
top 20 markets this Memorial Day Weekend. The word of mouth on the
film has been fantastic
and we are thankful to the critical community who has supported the film wholeheartedly.”
Notably, the film averaged a bit behind Baumbach and Gerwig’s previous collaboration, “Greenberg,” which averaged $39,384 from 3 theaters back in 2010. That said, the film benefited from the additional presence of Ben Stiller as the titular character.
As far as holdovers went, Roadside Attractions continued to see great numbers from Sarah Polley’s “Stories We Tell” and Jeff Nichols’ “Mud.” The former expanded to 23 theaters in its second weekend, grossing $136,820 for a $5,960 average. That bodes well as Roadside continues to expand the extremely well-reviewed film (it has the second highest 2013 score on Metacritic, behind only next weekend’s release “Before Midnight”)in the coming weeks.
“Mud,” meanwhile, hit 960 screens in its fourth weekend and had its third straight weekend in the overall top 10, grossing another $2,160,000 and taking its total past $10 million to $11,587,426. Its only the fourth 2013 specialty release — after “The Place Beyond The Pines,” “Quartet” and “Spring Breakers” — to past the $10 million milestone.
This weekend also marked the first time a specialty film from 2013 hit $20 million. In its eighth weekend, Derek Cianfrance’s “The Place Beyond The Pines” took its total to $20,605,591. “Mud” looks on track to join it in the $20 million club in the next few weeks.
