“Star Trek” fans are no doubt eagerly awaiting the release of “Star Trek Beyond,” the third film in the reboot series of the long-running franchise. Though they’re likely excited by the prospect of seeing their favorite characters go on yet another space adventure, now they have another reason to be enthusiastic. Melbourne’s Harold Sun reports that during promotional appearances in Australia actor John Cho revealed his character Sulu will have a same-sex partner as well as a loving daughter.

Known for its trailblazing progressivism, “Star Trek” has long been in front of controversial issues, but this would still be the first time they featured an openly gay character. However, the film doesn’t feature a big coming-out scene, but rather an unshowy nod. Praising the creative choice, Cho says that he “liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations.”

Cho also said that screenwriter Simon Pegg and director Justin Lin decision to make the character gay was an homage to the original actor George Takei, who was closeted during the show’s original run, but has now come out publicly and is a prominent gay rights activist.

“Star Trek Beyond” will open in theaters on July 22nd.
