Summer Line-Up Lacks Women: Thank God for Paul Feig’s ‘The Heat’ and Woody Allen’s ‘Blue Jasmine’ (Trailers)
We all know Hollywood ignores the female audience, because half of the moviegoing public supposedly can’t be counted on to show up in vast numbers on opening weekends. But the male bias also exists on the media side: check out EW’s May 17 forecast of the top ten box office movies of the summer.

Well, God forbid the editors of EW should make that call. Paul Feig’s buddy cop comedy starring yin and yang comediennes Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy knocked exhibitors and media’s hats off at CinemaCon in April. “The Heat” (June 28) should easily outpace “The Hangover Part III”‘s miserable box office performance.
But there’s slim pickings for women this summer. Luckily, Feig is holding down the fort on the studio side, thanks to his last film “Bridesmaids,” which for some reason was considered a huge risk at the time, despite all the numbers showing how successful movies aimed at women tend to be. (He talked about this on a women’s panel at CinemaCon.)
The independents pick up some of the slack, and there’s often a Woody Allen movie in the summer pipeline: this year Cate Blanchett stars in “Blue Jasmine” (July 26) see trailer below.
