SXSW ’10 Winners: “Tiny Furniture” & “Marwencol” Tops

SXSW '10 Winners: "Tiny Furniture" & "Marwencol" Tops

As the film conference portion of the SXSW Film Festival came to a climaxed today in Austin, TX, organizers announced the winners of 2010 festival tonight. Organizers unveiled the full list of winners tonight, even as the award ceremony continued in an Austin theater.

Lena Dunham’s “Tiny Furniture” won the narrative jury prize and Jeff Malmberg’s “Marwencol” was awarded the documentary jury trophy at the ceremony in the Austin Convention Center.

Dunham, a twenty-something woman who debuted her first feature this week in Austin, was clearly thrilled to win the award. “This is a movie about a girl with a pot belly, whining,” Dunham said, “So I am amazed and happy that the jury took to it.”

“And I want to say this is amazing to win just one week after Kathryn Bigelow winning the Oscar,” she continued, “Which was a big fucking deal for me. So thank you.”

Tiny Furniture” is the story of 22-year-old Aura, who returns home after college to her artist mother’s loft with the following: a useless film theory degree, 357 hits on her YouTube page, and no shoulders to cry on.

Marwencol” follows Mark Hogancamp, who seeks recovery following a vicious bar brawl in his made-up community, “Marwencol,” a 1/6th-scale World War II-era town he creates in his backyard.

Jurors for the 2010 SXSW Film Festival included an array of film industry insiders, critics and filmmakers. In the Narrative Feature Competition, jurors were Peter Debruge, Karen Durbin, and Joshua Leonard while in the Documentary Feature Competition, the jurors were Nelson George, Karina Longworth and Thom Powers. Narrative Shorts jurors included Amy Dotson, Christian Gaines, and Todd Luoto, while Documentary Shorts jurors were Don R. Lewis, Ron Mann, and Finlay Pretsell. Experimental Shorts jurors included Spencer Parsons, Esther Robinson, and Kelly Sears, while Animated Shorts jurors were Emily Hubley, Mark Elijah Rosenberg, and Nathan Zellner. Music Videos jurors were Margaret Brown, Philip Harder, and James Kochalka, while Texas Shorts jurors included Christopher Holland, Chris Mass, Anne Walker-McBay. Texas High School Shorts jurors were Marcy Garriott, Delicia Harvey, and Bart Weiss, while Title Design jurors were Ian Albinson, Alexander Ulloa, Susan Bradley, Karin Fong, Ron Pippin, and Remko Vlaanderen.

The festival’s Audience Awards for Spotlight Premieres, Emerging Visions, 24 Beats Per Second, Lone Star States, and Midnighters will be announced on Monday.
