Suspense-novel enthusiasts, rejoice: “The Girl on the Train” has at last premiered its evocative first trailer. Emily Blunt stars in the Tate Taylor–directed adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ best-selling novel, which was produced by Steven Spielberg.

Blunt plays Rachel, a divorced alcoholic in London whose loneliness inspires her to spy on a couple from afar, going so far as to make up names for the two and imagine what their lives must be like. This daydreaming eventually leads her down some dark, ill-advised paths; suffice to say that “The Girl on the Train” isn’t a comedy. All the while, Kanye West’s “Heartless” drones in the background. It all veers toward the moody and mysterious, evoking a vibe reminiscent of the promotional campaign for “Gone Girl.”

Blunt has emerged as one of the most talented actors of her generation in recent years, with roles in films like “Into the Woods” and “Sicario” raising her profile ever more. “The Girl on the Train,” which is arguably her most prominent leading role yet. will be released on October 7. Luke Evans, Hayley Bennett, Rebecca Ferguson, Laura Prepon, Edgar Ramirez, Justin Theroux, Allison Janney and Lisa Kudrow all co-star in the film.
