Well it took a while but finally someone succeeded in knocking off “Lucy”. Fox’s “The Maze Runner” equaled its #1 placement domestically with a very strong international debut of $37.6 million, landing it safely and securely in this week’s top spot. The film benefited from, other than Scarlett Johansson mowing down bad guys, a scarcity of competition, plus an IMAX component, which added $1.8 million to the take, a record September opening for a 2D title in that format. The weekend brought the film’s overall international cume to $49 million.
Elsewhere, “Into The Storm” continued to enjoy a tidy international run, adding $5.7 this weekend and pushing its overseas cume to an even $100 million (the film only grossed $46 million on these windswept shores) and the Japanese film, “Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends” grabbed the #10 spot with a $4.0 million opening in Asia.
