‘The Maze Runner’ Outduels Denzel Overseas, Adds Another $27.5 Million for a Box Office Repeat
In what ended up being a rather lackluster weekend overseas, “The Maze Runner” continued its international dominance with its second consecutive weekly win, adding $27.5 million to its coffers, which now totals $91 million. That was good enough to easily outdistance Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer”. Washington has never been an enormous draw across the pond and , despite an added $1.4 million from its 137 IMAX screens, the film finished in second place with $17.8 million in roughly the same number of markets (62 vs. 65) as “The Maze Runner”.
Laika Animation’s “The Boxtrolls”, despite opening in only 16 locales, finished fourth with another $5.1 million. The film has 35 territories yet to open and should move up the rankings this coming week. “Annabelle” which hits these shores on Friday, made its International debut this weekend, finishing third in Russia to the tune of $2.1 million. The film will expand into 22 markets, this coming Friday.
As far as milestones are concerned, “Lucy” is poised to hit the $400 million worldwide mark by next weekend, “Into The Storm” hit the $100 million international barrier this past weekend, and the roll continues for “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”, which should reach an astonishing $700 million worldwide by either this coming weekend or early next week.
