Toronto Film Festival Adds More Tuesday to Complete 2011 Lineup
The mammoth Toronto International Film Festival unveiled the last of its 2011 lineup today, with added titles to its Masters section, including work from Aki Kaurismäki, Hirokazu Kore-Eda, the Dardennes, Bruno Dumont, Gus Van Sant, Béla Tarr and more.

Additionally, the event, announced more selections for its Maverick series and Discovery program in addition to its Free programming, rounding out the massive Toronto International Film Festival’s overall lineup for 2011, which TIFF has rolled out in the past several weeks. In all, TIFF will screen 268 features and 68 shorts for its 2011 edition. Last year the event hosted 258 features and 81 shorts.
This year’s lineup includes 123 World debuts as well as 28 International and 98 North American premieres from 65 countries.
With Tuesday’s additions, thirteen titles joined the festival’s Masters section, joining previously announced titles, “Hard Core Logo II” (Bruce McDonald), “Pina” (Wim Wenders) and “This is Not a Film” (Jafar Panahi).
Toronto’s Mavericks series gives audiences the chance to hear from notable newsmakers from around the world as they share anecdotes and engage in conversations about their latest projects. Among the notables this year are Francis Ford Coppola, Deepa Mehta, Albert Maysles, Bradley Kaplan, Jonathan Demme, Tamer Ezzat and Ayten Amin; actors Christopher Plummer and Tilda Swinton; author Salman Rushdie; President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed; musician Neil Young; and Sony Pictures Classics founders Michael Barker and Tom Bernard.
“This is most ambitious Mavericks section we ve ever presented with movie-making legends, timely topics, celebrated artists from music and literature and even a sitting President,” commented Thom Powers, Toronto International Film Festival Mavericks programmer in a statement. “This diverse group of guests will have audiences talking for months to come.”
TIFF’s Discovery section spotlights first and second feature filmmakers from upcoming filmmakers. This year’s lineup includes 25 features making their world, International or North American debuts in Toronto, including work from Iceland, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Russia and South Korea.
Toronto’s Free Programming spotlights an array of work and conversational events. The World Premiere of Mark Cousins’ epic 15-hour documentary “The Story of Film: An Odyssey” will screen throughout the ten-day event. Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb’s “This is Not a Film” – a day-in-the-life portrait of filmmaker Jafar Panahi, under house arrest in Iran is also on tap, as well as a screening of the winner of the 2011 Cadillac People’s Choice Award.
Also open to audiences free of charge is a City to City Panel of filmmakers and programmers exploring the emerging film scene in Buenos Aires as well as a special discussion to accompany the Future Projections installation James Franco and Gus Van Sant: “Memories of Idaho.”
