Trailer of the Week: Latest Preview for Spike Jonze's 'Her' Set to New Arcade Fire Track
Before the Trailer, We Thought: With the release date a mere two weeks away and having already premiered at NYFF, there is already plenty of positive buzz for Spike Jonze’s latest. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore, a recently divorced man who falls in love with an operating system named Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), Indiewire’s Eric Kohn praised the film for the way it “wrestles an inherently absurd concept about people trapped in outlandish circumstances into significant emotional territory.” The only concern is the film’s release date: with “American Hustle” opening on the same day and have just gained a tremendous amount of steam in the Oscar race in the past few days, in addition to the onslaught of other high-profile releases, “Her” has the risk of getting lost in the shuffle.

And Now: The newest trailer definitely showcases more of the film’s plot, giving more of a peek at the dynamics between the characters as well as strange romance at the center. Set to Arcade Fire’s “Supersymmetry,” which was originally written for the film, the two-and-a-half minute clip shows Theodore attempts to make sense of his unusual burgeoning romance, with his ex-wife (Rooney Mara) being extremely judgmental of the whole thing while his co-worker (Amy Adams) maintains a hopeful curiosity. Mostly, though, the trailer highlights the incredibly emotional nature of that bond, proving that it’s not just a comedic riff the Siri generation but is a fully grounded meditation on love and loneliness. “I can feel the fear that you carry around,” Samantha tells Theodore at one point. “I wish I could help you let go of it, because I don’t think you’d feel so alone anymore.” While “Her” may not sweep the impending awards season, this trailer makes us even more hopeful that it will find the audience it deserves when it opens in limited release on December 18.
