BBC Films has released a trailer for documentary filmmaker Morgan Matthews’ feature directorial debut, “X+Y,” which will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
Inspired by Matthews’ 2007 documentary, “Beautiful Young Minds,” “X+Y” is a coming-of-age story focused on Nathan (“Ender’s Game” star Asa Butterfield), a young math prodigy who has trouble relating to other people, including his own mother. Impressed by Nathan’s intellectual gifts, one of his teachers, Mr. Humphreys, takes Nathan under his wing. With the help of Mr. Humphreys’ coaching, Nathan manages to secure a spot on Great Britain’s team for the International Mathematics Olympiad. When the team travels to Taipei to train for the competition, he meets a beautiful Chinese girl who makes him feel things he never before thought he could feel.
Sally Hawkins, Rafe Spall and Eddie Marsan co-star as Nathan’s mother, Mr. Humphreys and the training camp squad leader, respectively. Actress Jo Yang makes her debut as Nathan’s love interest.
Based on the trailer, which you can watch below, “X+Y” reminds us that no matter how much experience we may have with love, it’s never simple. But despite the ups and downs, the journey is always worth it.
