It’s not often that a single scene from a completely unfamiliar film, with an equally unfamiliar director and cast, will, in a matter of seconds, manage to convince you to watch the entire film.
Austrian art house horror “Goodnight Mommy,” however, is a major exception.
Directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, “Goodnight Mommy” is a twisted tale that centers on two twin boys, who become convinced that their mother is no longer actually their mother after she returns home from plastic surgery with her face covered in bandages.
The scene in question — the one that made us shiver with fear and hooked us all at once — has a certain amount of Hitchcockian flavor to it. That’s all we’ll say. Watch the complete scene below and decide for yourself.
“Goodnight Mommy” will premiere at the Venice International Film Festival later this month and subsequently screen at the Toronto International Film Festival at the beginning of September.
