In his previous features “The Orphanage” and “The Impossible,” Juan Antonio Bayona has proven his affinity for suspense through impressive visual work, and that success looks to strike again in his latest, “A Monster Calls.” The film stars Liam Neeson, Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones and newcomer Lewis MacDougall in the lead role of Conor, a 12-year-old boy who escapes the harsh realities of his life — his mother is ill and he is bullied by his classmates — by entering a fantastical world full of monsters and fairy tales.
The movie is based on an award-winning children’s novel by Patrick Ness, and the trailer suggests a film akin to the director’s previous works thanks to its suspenseful building of tension and its relatable use of child actors.
Check out the teaser trailer above, which is set to Liam Neeson’s gravity narration and the beautiful melody from “Cloud Atlas.”
“A Monster Calls” arrives in theaters October 14, 2016.
