“Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

– Emma Lazarus, Poet, 1883, excerpt from the second stanza of the sonnet “New Colossus,” inscribed on the lower level of the Statue of Liberty in New York City.

British documentary filmmaker Kim Longinotto has spent the majority of her career using film to examine various forms of community activism, specifically in relation to women’s issues across the world.

Her latest film, “Dreamcatcher,” which is slated to screen in the world documentary competition at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival later this month, tells the story of Brenda Myers-Powell, Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Dreamcatcher Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that focuses its efforts exclusively on assisting women in the Chicago area who are victims of sexual exploitation. According to the foundation’s website, Dreamcatcher is, in it’s own words, “survivor-led and survivor-focused.”

The trailer for the film, which you can watch below exclusively on Indiewire, provides a glimpse into into Myers-Powell’s on-the-ground involvement with the women that The Dreamcatcher Foundation serves.

“Dreamcatcher” is being distributed by Dogwoof in the U.K. and is currently seeking U.S. distribution.
