Millenium Films has released a trailer for Barry Levinson’s latest film, “The Humbling,” following the film’s debut last week at the Venice International Film Festival.
Based on Philip Roth’s 2009 novel of the same name, “The Humbling” is a dark comedy that stars Al Pacino as a washed up actor who enters into a bizarre sexual relationship with a much younger woman, who is played by Greta Gerwig.
While the trailer certainly outlines the film’s main plot points, the fact that it is pretty much spoiler-free may is cause of unease — not about the quality of the film, but rather the nature of what is not being shown. Most of the clips chosen for the trailer, even the most confrontational ones, appear light when viewed out of context. The absence of unpleasant scenes, however, suggests that the film has something sinister planned for the characters and, by extension, us as the audience.
