One of the strangest and most intriguing documentaries to premiere at Sundance this year, Jon Foy’s “Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles,” dropped its trailer today and it looks mighty promising.

In the film, Foy follows Justin Duerr, a guy obsessed with uncovering the story behind hundreds of cryptic tiled messages about resurrecting the dead that have been appearing in city streets over the past thirty years.

If that sounds like an oddity of a plot, the trailer makes it seem even more out of this world. The whole thing plays like a narrative mystery with a paranormal edge; not like your run-of-the-mill documentary. Sure, some talking heads pop up, but the clip hints at some nifty directorial flourishes (including a beautiful animated sequence) that signal “Resurrect Dead” as something special.

All of this, coupled with Foy’s win at Sundance for the Documentary Directing Award, should make you curious to check it out when it opens in limited release on September 2.
