Fans of Craig Zobel’s 2012 psychological thriller “Compliance” have been waiting patiently for the director’s next movie for three years now, but the delay is almost over thanks to “Z for Zachariah.” Roadside Attractions has released the first trailer for the apolocyptic drama, which premiered to favorable reviews at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and stars Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine.

The official synopsis reads: “In the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman (Robbie) survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist (Ejiofor), he’s nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley (Pine), their precarious bond begins to unravel.”

“Compliance” was an unnerving character duel that slowly revealed itself as a meditation on human connection, and the chilling “Zachariah” trailer above suggests Zobel has extended this theme while strengthening his directorial vision. Expect another knockout thriller.

Roadside Attractions will release the film on August 21.
