The trailer for Michael Mann’s upcoming film “Blackhat” was released today, marking another entry in an Oscar field getting a bit crowded. The film once had the humble/mysterious working title of “Untitled Michael Mann Cyber-Thriller,” but now it looks poised for serious success; while currently scheduled for a January release, it could get an Oscar-qualifying run if the studio thinks it can compete for any awards.
Michael Mann is an under-the-radar Oscar favorite, meaning his films usually draw a lot of attention from the Academy. He’s been nominated four times, but his films — including “The Insider,” “The Last of the Mohicans,” “Ali,” “Collateral,” and “The Aviator,” which he produced — have garnered dozens of awards. His last two have been shut out after disappointing critics and audiences, but “Blackhat” could be a return-to-form for the digital-friendly director.
