Many of us can probably relate to Alex (Natalia Tena) and Sergei (David Verdaguer) the main characters in Carlos Marques-Marcet’s “10,000 KM.” In the film, the loving, happy couple is forced to carry on a long-distance relationship from 10,000 km (6,200 mi) apart after Alex moves to Los Angeles to pursue an artist’s residency while Sergei stays in Barcelona.
As the weeks pass, Sergei and Alex find it more and more difficult to maintain their relationship–it’s a tough thing to do when you’re far away from one another, as anyone who has ever lost touch with a friend or significant other can attest. This film, conducted on Skype through laptops, presents one possible future of romance movies in the digital era, just as “Unfriended” reframes slasher horror for the digital world.
“10,000 km” won awards at the 2014 AFI Fest, SXSW Film Festival, and Seattle International Film Festival, and will have a limited theatrical release on July 10.
