It’s award season, so we’re getting a surfeit of dramas and star-director projects, but mostly every studio is doubling down on making moviegoing an event experience. That means BIG. Huge spectacles, more luxurious theaters, more IMAX screens, better 3D, faster frame rates, better sound via immersive 3D Dolby Atmos (which is now installed on more than 1000 screens) and Dolby Vision and AMC’s state-of-the-art Dolby Cinemas.
The “Point Break” remake has little to do with the original. Rather it advances the notion of Xtreme sports on film. Directed by “Fast and Furious” cinematographer Ericson Core the actioner stars Aussie Luke Gracey as an extreme athlete and deploys the world’s best athletes in the pursuit not just of giant waves (Laird Hamilton is back as an advisor) but winter sports and heart-stopping web-flying in formation through narrow canyons in the Swiss alps. I don’t know how good the movie is, but the sports footage I saw at CinemaCon is stunning.
