Ryan Gosling’s highly-anticipated directorial debut “Lost River” was not well-received after premiering at Cannes last year, with critics almost uniformly ripping into the film.
The newly-released trailer indicates that Gosling’s first effort behind the camera will be an ambitious, atmospheric piece of filmmaking. The Oscar-nominated actor has discussed how “Drive” director Nicholas Winding Refn inspired him, and you can definitely see that here in the trailer’s evocative images and moody score.
“Lost River” is a macabre and fantastical film set against the backdrop of a fading city. The story centers on Billy (Christina Hendricks of “Mad Men”), who is immersed in a dangerous mystery after her teenage son Bones finds a secret road that leads to an underwater town.
Though critics derided the film overall, many indicated that the movie at least introduces Gosling as a promising filmmaker with an excellent eye. With a terrific cast including Ben Mendelsohn, Eva Mendes and Saoirse Ronan, and with a very intriguing trailer now unveiled, “Lost River” appears worth a look, and may fare better in wider release.
Here’s the official trailer:
