Watch: Sundance Stoner Dramedy 'Newlyweeds' Shows Highs and Lows of Love New Trailer

Phase 4 Films has just released the first trailer for Sundance entry, “Newlyweeds,” director Shaka King’s feature debut. Part romantic comedy, part stoner comedy, and all heart, the film premiered in Park City before hitting the BAMcinemaFest in Brooklyn this June. Amari Cheatom (“Django Unchained”) and Trae Harris star as two lovers torn between each other and their second passion: weed.

Sharp-eyed observers will notice two welcome faces in the trailer, both of whom appeared in HBO’s highly-respected television show, “The Wire.” Isiah Whitlock Jr., who played Senator Clay Davis, shows up in the quick prison scene and Hasaan Johnson, who played West-side warrior Wee-Bey Brice, gives our protagonist proper warning from the driver’s seat.

Indiewire’s Eric Kohn went behind the scenes of the production before its Sundance premiere. Kohn describes the final tasks performed for the film before it’s shipped off to the festival. The film is slated to open September 18 at the Film Forum in New York City as well as other select theaters. It next plays at Sundance’s NEXT WEEKEND festival in LA on August 10th and 11th.
