When horror and comedy combine, the result can be either inventive or downright boring. Todd Strauss-Schulson’s upcoming comedy “The Final Girls” should fall in the former category based on its in a genre-bending trailer and female-fronted cast.
“The Final Girls” centers on Max, a high school senior who somehow gets transported with her friends into a 1980’s horror film that starred her mother. While trapped inside the movie, Max becomes reunited with her mother, who she lost in real life. Together, they must avoid the hormonal camp counselors, fight a machete-armed killer and escape the movie safely. The film stars Taissa Farmiga, Malin Akerman, Alexander Ludwig, Nina Dobrev, Alia Shawkat, Thomas Middleditch and Adam Devine.
The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this year and will make its Canadian premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. The film will be released in October. Check out the trailer above.
