‘xXx: The Return of Xander Cage’ Teaser Trailer: Vin Diesel Releases High-Flying First Look At Action Sequel

Vin Diesel brings the wisecracking badass back to the big screen for the first time in 14 years.

Part James Bond, part “Point Break,” the original “xXx” was a cheesy action spy thriller with enough badass set pieces and trademark Vin Diesel charisma to turn a profit. The same wasn’t true for its sequel, “xXx: State of the Union,” which replaced its star with a new hero played by Ice Cube and proved just how important Diesel’s presence was in giving ludicrous action a level of actual enjoyment.

No one may be clamoring for the long dormant “xXx” franchise to be reborn, but luckily it’s coming back with its star intact this time. “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” finds Diesel’s government operative coming out of exile to hunt down a deadly weapon known as Pandora’s Box. He’s got competition in the form of Donnie Yen’s warrior Xiang, and he’ll have to find a new crew of thrill seekers if he wants to find the device first.

The plot here is nothing special — we’ve got our world-destroying McGuffin setting the plot in motion and a race-against-the-clock battle to create suspense — but, let’s face it, anyone buying a ticket to this one just wants to see a wisecracking Diesel kick some ass, and that’s exactly what the teaser hints at. “It’s good to be back,” Diesel cracks, as a montage of motorcycle-flipping, hand-to-hand combat scenes tease all the madness to come. Watch the teaser over on Diesel’s Facebook page.

Directed by D.J. Caruso (“Disturbia,” “Eagle Eye”), “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” also stars Deepika Padukone,  Samuel L. Jackson, Tony Jaa, Nina Dobrev and Ruby Rose. Paramount Pictures will release the film on January 20, 2017.
