“Ferris Bueller” Reconsidered, “Batman Begins” Tourism, “The Nic Cage Song” and Other Links

– In the list ‘9 Famous Movie Villains Who Were Right All Along,’ Cracked finds justification in the motives of villains in a number of movies, including “The Matrix,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Lord of the Rings” and of course “The Rock.” Here’s an excerpt from their defense of Principal Rooney from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”:
And you know what? He was right all along. Ferris was skipping school. Worse yet, he lied to his parents and friends about being sick and pretty much got the whole town involved in the farce. He lied, he stole, and he caused millions in property damage by destroying Cameron’s dad’s beautiful car. That’s not adorable, that’s just being an egocentric cock. It wouldn’t have been a satisfying movie ending to see Rooney expose Bueller for his douchebaggery, but it would have been by far the more just outcome. What happens instead is that Rooney loses his wallet and almost has his nipples ripped off by a Rottweiler.
And we’re asked to sit back and say, “serves him right for caring about the future of our country!”
As a childhood fan of “Ferris Bueller” who is now grown up and slightly more responsible, I am now totally seeing Rooney’s point of view. But I would also like someone to write a novel or screenplay that retells the film from his perspective. Or, if any publisher or studio wants to give me an advance, I’ll just do it myself.
– “The Matrix” also obviously figures on Wired’s democratic list of ‘Best Sci-Fi Effects of All Time, As Voted By You,’ where it joins an obvious crop of films like “Avatar,” “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Star Wars,” “Inception” and many more. I have to say I’m glad the underrated effects of “Poltergeist” get a respectable shout out.
– Disney may be planning a big budget adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time” for 2013. But for now, if not forever, this 90 second version should suffice. Don’t worry if you’ve never read the book; it’s just as hard to understand as this Newberry contest entry, and not as cute.

– Hopefully all the clubs will be playing “The Nic Cage Song” this year (with its necessary visual accompaniment). It doesn’t seem like it’d be good to dance to, but that’s the beauty. Dancing like a wildman Cage to the quote-filled remix of crazy Cage moments has to be the point.
– If you’re into movie tourism, Anomalous Material suggests/guides you on trips through the locations of “Amelie,” “Sherlock Holmes” and “Batman Begins,” the last of which is spread over Chicago and London.
– Not going to Sundance this year but want to see some of the films playing there? In a theater, that is, not on VOD? Cinematical lists the most likely films to get a release soon after the fest is over.

– Golden Globe nominee “Red” is getting a follow-up. Let’s hope it’s more satisfying than the first movie. Or, at least gives Helen Mirren something skimpier to wear.
