Mythic adversaries collide for an epic battle in ‘Godzilla vs. King.’ Released in select theaters and on HBO Max on Wednesday, the action-packed film, directed by Adam Wingard, stars Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir, Michael Daugherty, Shun Oguru, and Eiza González.
The latest chapter from the Legendary Pictures MonsterVerse features Godzilla and King Kong going head-to-head in a high-powered clash of the Titans, and with moviegoers just starting to trickle back into theaters, ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ gives fans an option to enjoy it on the big screen, but also stream from the comforts of home (as many times as you want). While theaters and movie studios may be banking on building momentum leading into Memorial Day Weekend to help jumpstart a mostly sluggish year brought on by the global pandemic, streaming remains the best alternative to watch your favorite films — without worrying so much about social distancing.
‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ is one of the many Warner Bros. films streaming exclusively on HBO Max at no additional cost to subscribers. Signing up for HBO Max is a quick and easy process, unlocking tons of streaming perks that are especially perfect for binge watchers who want first dibs on new releases the moment they hit theaters. For $14.99 a month, subscribers get access to countless blockbusters, TV classics, original series, and more. Like every other Warner Bros. release this year, ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ will only be streaming on HBO Max for 31 days after its theatrical release, so be sure to catch it while you can.
For movie buffs who enjoy high-impact fight sequences, ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ doesn’t waste time getting straight to the battles. “Within the first 40 minutes of ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,’ the duo are battling it out,” writes IndieWire’s Deputy Film Editor Kate Erbland. “The film’s final act is almost entirely devoted to fighting, which includes a super-powered foe for both of them. (Godzilla fans can likely guess where this is going and they won’t be disappointed.)”
Wingard’s vision for the brawls between Kong and Godzilla were inspired by action films such as “Lethal Weapon” and ‘Die Hard,’ he recently said. “I always saw Kong in this film as an ‘80s action hero or an early ‘90s Shane Black action hero. I’m a big fan of that style of action where the action hero is this guy who’s down on his luck.
“Godzilla is way more powerful than [Kong]. And then on top of that, we’ve put Kong on the ocean,” he continued. “This is Godzilla’s element. So the stakes and the danger level are already high for this character, but then you want to amplify that. And the inspiration for that really comes from ‘Die Hard’ more than anything. That’s why the movie has a ‘Die Hard’ reference here and there from a visual standpoint.”
‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ is the fourth installment to the MonsterVerse film franchise which includes, “Godzilla,” “Godzilla: King of Monsters,” and “Kong: Skull Island.”
