How the Best Movies of 2022 Challenged Expectations

As Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson share their favorite movies of 2022 in this week's Screen Talk, some common themes emerge.

This year has been a challenging one for the film industry, but that doesn’t mean the movies didn’t deliver the goods. From “TÁR” to “RRR” to “Avatar: The Way of Water” — three celebrated releases that sound somewhat alike but otherwise have very little in common — the cinema of 2022 has been loaded with innovation and big ideas. That outcome extends to other memorable movies this year that didn’t receive as much attention as they deserve, such as “Apollo 10 1/2” and “Beba.” This is where top 10 lists come in handy: They allow us to look back on the year to celebrate not only the obvious highlights but the ones that got overlooked.

Enter this year’s penultimate episode of Screen Talk, in which Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson swap their lists and — per usual — find more overlap than they expected and address some blindspots. They also share their runners-up and additional categories as well as a few movies that didn’t make the cut. Finally, as awards season continues, they explore the potential impact of the recent Golden Globes and Critics Choice nominations for various Oscar campaigns. Stay tuned for the last episode of the year next week.
