‘CODA’ Questions: Why It’s Not an Obvious Best Picture Contender

In recent weeks, the Sundance breakout has gained momentum. But is that enough for a big win?

'CODA': An Oscars Best Picture Frontrunner?

A year ago, “CODA” was already making headlines for dominating the Sundance awards and landing a lucrative deal with Apple. Now, it’s generating buzz for a very different reason: The Oscar nominee is strong in several categories, with Troy Kotsur now the leading contender for Best Supporting Actor. The good vibes following “CODA” around, elevated by its recent SAG ensemble win, have led some to speculate that it’s now the frontrunner for Best Picture.

In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Anne Thompson talks about why she still sees greater potential for Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” and shares insights from several recent awards events around town. Co-host Eric Kohn offers his own assessment from New York, and anticipates his upcoming experience at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX. The pair also look ahead to the final round of Oscar voting, just around the corner.
