Beyond ‘Doctor Strange’: Why This Week’s Movie Hype Belongs to Alex Garland, Gaspar Noé, and Audrey Diwan

There is much more than the MCU to celebrate this week — if only you know where to look.

HAPPENING Still 3

For most moviegoers, this week is all about “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” And while director Sam Raimi’s Marvel sequel certainly has plenty of cinematic trickery worth talking about (and some spoilers probably best left unspoiled), it’s far from the only movie generating buzz this week — at least in these parts.

In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson discuss several new movies worth just as much attention as the Marvel heavy-hitter. They swap notes on their experiences watching Alex Garland’s “Men” at a carefully-orchestrated premiere hosted by A24, and explore why it took place ahead of the movie’s Cannes screening.

Kohn recommends two new films from Gaspar Noé, “Vortex” and “Lux Aeterna,” as they make their way to New York. And Thompson returns to Audrey Diwan’s “Happening,” the French abortion drama that just happens to be coming out on the same week as the horrifying news that the Supreme Court is likely to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The hosts also discuss their takeaways from the new Tracy Letts play “The Minutes,” which they saw on Broadway last weekend, and look ahead to a busy week of screenings leading up to Cannes.
