The new year hasn’t exactly started on the most encouraging note. The storming of the Capitol building by insurrectionists on Wednesday sent a shockwave around the world, as the very pillars of democracy were tested in real time. Americans were glued to their TV sets. Lives were lost. Public servants were forced to shelter in place. And in the aftermath, the country’s ruling party is trying to remove the sitting president with two weeks left in his term. Who wants to talk about movies?

But despite all these troubling circumstances, the film industry has a lot going on, including an awards season that still has several months to go. In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson talk through the unnerving experience of watching the D.C. events this week, then survey the surprisingly long list of Oscar hopefuls that most Academy voters have yet to see.
