It may be a new year, but the Oscar race keeps rolling along. As usual, many of the contenders that were in place a few weeks ago remain there, from “The Fabelmans” to “Avatar: The Way of Water.” At the same time, intriguing campaigns for other contenders have been sneaking into the conversation, from “RRR” to “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” both of which could hack their way into one of the 10 slots for Best Picture.

Kohn shares takeaways from attending the New York Film Critics Circle dinner — including a poignant moment featuring David Byrne — while Thompson offers insight into how this year’s critical darlings could benefit from the support. They also preview this Tuesday’s Golden Globes ceremony and the many guild nominations that follow it, in addition to sharing some of the movies they got a chance to see at the end of the year.
